J.K. Rowling reveals her Patronus on Twitter

by Tracey Wong · September 10, 2014

The Harry Potter fandom is rejoicing as J.K. Rowling continues to interact with fans on her official Twitter account. Earlier today, Rowling answered a fan’s question about what her own Patronus would be: a pine marten.

.@acciowandspells It’s a pine marten.

— J.K. Rowling (@jk_rowling) September 10, 2014

Some fun and interesting points about this revelation:

  • Pine martens belong to the Mustelidae family, which also includes otters (Hermione Granger’s Patronus), badgers (the symbol of Hufflepuff House), and weasels (from which the name “Weasley” is derived).
  • In Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series, Lyra Belacqua’s dæmon (the physical representation of a person’s soul) Pantalaimon takes the final form of a pine marten.
  • Pine martens have a fondness for jam and peanut butter sandwiches.

A few days ago, Rowling hinted at an upcoming test on Pottermore where users can find out their own Patronus.

Do you think this animal suits Rowling? What do you think your Patronus would be?

Did You Know

Quidditch started in the 11th century at a place called Queerditch Marsh, which is not marked on Muggle maps because wizards have made the place unplottable. Originally, it was quite a crude game played on broomsticks with just the Quaffle.

Potter History

January 3, 2006 – Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was named the highest-earning film internationally for 2005. It earned $850 million.

Potter Quote

“Cedric was a person who exemplified many of the qualities that distinguish Hufflepuff house. He was a good and loyal friend, a hard worker, he valued fair play. His death has affected you all, whether you knew him well or not. I think that you have the right, therefore, to know exactly how it came about. […] Cedric Diggory was murdered by Lord Voldemort.”
